Lotus Flowers
2005

My sister bought me a book ‘How to make a mold of an apple’ and pour it in plaster. I had no interest in making plaster apples to adorn my kitchen table, but I began to understand the concept of creating molds.

‘Plugs’ and ‘undercuts’. I began to view everything around me in possibilities of creating a mold.

A few weeks after receiving my book, I was in Bali with my drawings on graph paper, including dimensions and depth of cut for my Indian inspired poured concrete garden collection.

I spoke no Indonesian, and the wood carvers that I chose to make my ‘plugs’ spoke no English. So there was lots of drawing between us both.

Six weeks later my shipment of carved wooden pieces arrived in Brisbane. Fibreglass molds of my pieces were made by a professional concreter and voila. Poured concrete lotus flower garden furniture and pavers….

Sadly my sister didn’t buy me a book on best business practices.
